'Tis Autumn

‘Tis Autumn and while Summer 2019 was wonderful, I am looking forward to all the wonderful things that come with the changing seasons!

Tousled walks you through four easy steps to get your hair back on track in time for the holidays!

  1. Get rid of those ends - trim! : Split ends can be caused by a whole host of issues, roughing up your hair with a terry towel as you come out of the pool, fevered sweaty all night dancing before an early morning fight, or rank neglect because who cares its summer. Well its Autumn now and you need to start caring again. You look crazy. The only wait to get rid of those lifeless and undoubtedly split ends is to cut them off at the knees! Do it now before they continue to split!

  2. Whip up a natural hair mask (seasonally appropriate of course) : Try this DIY hair mask!

    Pumpkin & Oat Deep Conditioner

2 oz raw, pumpkin pulp (seedless)

2 oz unrefined, raw coconut oil (liquefied)

2 oz raw shea butter (solidified)

1 oz fixed, vegetable oil (An oil packed with vitamin E like olive oil or sunflower)

1 tsp of raw, organic oatmeal powder

Add your oils, raw shea butter, and the pumpkin pulp in a mixing bowl. Next, add the oatmeal powder; using a powdered form of the oats will fluff your conditioning mask and ensure a workable consistency for tight curls whereas those hard oats can be harder to detect in a blender. Blend your ingredients in a blender until a smooth consistency is reached before transferring to a sealable, tinted container. This is ready for immediate use and should be kept refrigerated with a shelf life of 5 days.

  3. Purchase a silk pillow case : A silk pillow case is for all seasons but if you’re jump starting a new regimen then why not invest in a new silk pillow case. Tousled warns against inexpensive satin weave pillowcases. Satin is NOT silk! It’s shiny but its not silk! Instead invest in a Slip pillow case. According to Slip “[h]airstylists have long recommended sleeping on gentle, hair-friendly silk to help preserve your blow out. Ordinary pillowcases can cause hair tangling during the night. In laboratory testing, slipsilk™ has been shown to reduce friction by 43% on average*.”

  4. Kick off a supplement regimen : Great hair is made from the inside out! A demanding career, travel, family and being the badest chick in your crew can mean things slide. Case in point. For two weeks straight my morning café latte happened to be my breakfast and lunch… geeze. A similarly pulled Tousled reader just asked me for a recommendation to super charge her hair but quick. The best way to get that super charge is to get yourself on a regular course of prenatal vitamins. We are going with Nature’s Way, Alive Prenatal Vitamins. While there are many brands available, you’ll want to choose a prenatal vitamin that includes:

    • folic acid

    • iron

    • calcium

    • vitamins D, C, A, and E

    • zinc

    • copper
