Hair Care Tools for Curly Girls

When detangling hair or simply trying to sort it out so that you can go out of doors without small children pointing and running away, hair type 3’s can go through some undeniable trauma.

While it’s all the rage to let the curls fly free it still can end up in some pretty woeful results when attempting to style between the thickness or fineness of your curls, humidity, wind velocity, barometric pressure and the arch of the moon - hair type 3’s may opt for a flatiron and prayer.

In keeping with our theme of the best in tools however, it is important to recognize that the best curls (are preserved from wet to dry by how you handle or (don’t) manipulate them.

Outside of your fingers (which are the absolute best) it’s all in the method which is usually accompanied by the best tools. We’ve looked and picked our a few to help you on your way to your most fabulous curls.

Take it from the experts, “combing, pulling, and stretching—can lead to shredding of the cuticle [hair’s protective outer layer],” says Ouidad Curl Advisory Board member Helen Wagmeister, a certified trichologist and hair stylist at Cosmo & Company in West Palm Beach, FL.

Consider these tools when making your way through your curly girl routine.

We recommend:

  1. Curly Hair Solutions Original Flexy Brush - This brush is great for detangling and brushing in the shower — ANNNNNDDD also doubles as a scalp massager. Remember when using a brush on curly hair ALWAYS start from the ends (tips) and work your way to the roots. The longer, more flexible bristles on the Flexy Brush exfoliate the scalp whilst the shorter bristles will remove tangles.

  2. The Diane Oil Detangler Comb - Have you heard of an Oil Comb? Well listen up! There are a host of oil infused combs on offer with popular oils such as olive oil, argan oil and macadamia oil claimed to be infused into the comb.  Who knew a simple little comb could be so complex?! Let me be perfectly clear though! There is no science or actual evidence that I have found to substantiate that an oil infused comb would actually release oil while detangling. That said celebrity stylist Bridget Brager says, "If you are lucky enough to have beautiful ringlets, you’ll want to minimize breakage and snagging. The wide teeth mimic finger combing to gently detangle and keep curls in shape. Allegedly the Diane Oil Detangler Comb is coated in vitamin E and omega-3 oils to give curls the extra hydration they need.

The Diane Oil Detangler Comb is inexpensive so at the very least you’ll have a solid wide tooth comb to assist you on your detangling mission.

Please let us know what you think of the two suggestion above. Have you tried these tools? Have you heard of the hype surrounding oil infused combs or brushes? Do you have a favorite tool you’d like to recommend? We’d love to hear from you. You know what to do! Leave your comment below.
